About me and this blog

My name is Chuck Peters. I am the CEO of The Gazette Company in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, a local media company serving Eastern Iowa primarily through The Gazette newspaper and KCRG – TV9, an ABC affiliate, along with numerous niche print and online products.

When I started this blog, I had just returned from the Newspaper Association of America annual meeting in Washington, DC in April, 2008.

Newspaper executives from around the world are trying to implement new business models. However, it is hard to implement a new model with an old mindset. Many are trying to arrange the concepts for a new ecosystem of local information. What I hope to do here is share my thoughts, and connections, as we explore these new frontiers.

    Your blog is most interesting. Having been removed from the media/publishing field for a few years I realize how much I miss issues LIU and LoMediaCo.

    Your concept of accessing any information, any time, from any device is intriguing. I mean, how convenient is that!

    Of course, having grown up in the local newspaper business I understand the special bond available to LoMediaCo with their audience, if they (LoMediaCo) just act on the opportunities to engage said audience in a manner acceptable to that audience.

  2. Chuck, here are my comments regarding your Local Information Utility article. First, I want to say that this is a great article and very forward thinking, yet relevant to today’s technology. Many companies (outside this industry) are using this business model and making money at it.

    1. First Bridges within company: This actually excited me. Being an eastern Iowa native, I would very much like to have access and purchase any news that included me and my family in the last 30 years. Especially deceased loved ones. I would be willing to pay a reasonable micro-payment to make this happen. Being able to have search access to a video and article database that could give me any relevant family information would be great. Sports highlights,

    2. Second bridges β€œcoopetition” models: Great idea that benefits companies that are willing to build infrastructure. Very similar to Competetive Local Exchange Carriers renting space from the AT&T Bell LECs.

    3. Third bridges, rich media databases: As my bridge 1 comments state, this has huge potential.

  3. I commend you for working towards bridging the gap between old and new media.

    In general, there will be a shift from brand names to keywords.
